Why do I need temporary teeth?

Before the implants can be placed, your unhealthy teeth must be removed

• temporary teeth will replace your unhealthy teeth
• these teeth will help you eat and speak normally until the permanent teeth are ready
• you wear these teeth for 7-18 months;  the time depends on the type of implant bridge treatment

 

Are the type of temporary teeth important?

Yes.  Temporary teeth will determine                  

• how you look and feel during the 7-18 months of implant bridge treatment
• the type of Implant Guide used by the surgeon to position the implants
  
  

There are 3 types of temporary teeth:

Temporary Teeth:

Why do I need temporary teeth?

There are 3 types of temporary teeth:

• Temporary denture  (removable teeth)

• Temporary bridge    (not removable)

• Provisional Implant bridge    (not removable)

Temporary Denture 

These teeth will be placed immediately after all of the unhealthy teeth are removed.  A denture is the most common type of temporary teeth because it simplifies the overall treatment.  These teeth are removable and usually require denture adhesive (Polygrip, Fixodent) to hold the teeth in your mouth.

Benefit: 

• Can use any type of implant guide
  
  
• Low cost

Downside:  

• Teeth are removable 
  
  
  

 

Temporary Bridge

A temporary bridge would be cemented on 2 or 3 of the stronger teeth and the other unhealthy teeth would then be removed.  A few months later, the temporary bridge and the support teeth will be removed, the implants will be placed and a provisional implant bridge (an Immediate bridge) would be connected to the implants; this provisional bridge is also temporary.  These bridges eliminate the need to wear a removable denture.  There is some added cost to make the first temporary bridge.


Benefit: 

•  Not a denture  (teeth are not removable)
  
  
•  Can use any type of implant guide

Downside:          

• Some added cost compared to a denture

Provisional Implant Bridge

A Provisional Implant Bridge is used during a procedure called "Immediate-load treatment" or "Teeth in a Day":  in one day, all of the unhealthy teeth are removed, the implants are placed and a provisional bridge is immediately connected to the implants; this provisional bridge is also temporary.  While this procedure reduces overall treatment time by 3 months, there is a small increase in implant failure.  An immediate bridge also eliminates the need to wear a removable denture.


Benefit:  

• Not denture  (teeth are not removable)
  
  
• Treatment time reduced by 3 months

 

Downside:          

• Cannot use a surgical guide
  
  
• Increased risk of implant failure
